Number of Tornadoes in Iowa by Month
While tornadoes typically occur from April through June in Iowa, it’s important to remember that tornadoes can happen at any time of day, and any day of the year.
Looking at Iowa tornado climatology, there has been a tornado every month with the exception of January. Below is a graph showing the total number of tornadoes in each month from 1980-2019.
That equates to the following averages per month in Iowa: 0 tornadoes in January and February, 2 tornadoes in March, 6 tornadoes in April, 12 tornadoes in May, 14 tornadoes in June, 6 tornadoes in July, 4 tornadoes in August, 2 tornadoes in September, 1 tornado in October and November, and 0 in December.
So while tornadoes are not as common in the fall and winter months as they are in the spring and summer months, fall and winter are the best time of year to get a storm shelter installed before tornado season ramps back up.
